Chapter 156 - 7. Desserts
Razor could literally feel death breathing down his neck.
But luckily he reacted in time — and managed to grab onto the nearest thick root. And then something completely unexpected happened.
A familiar voice came from above:
— You bastard!
Someone kicked Philip in the back and he collapsed. Razor watched in shock as his brother flew swiftly into the abyss.
— How long are you going to hang there? Give me your hand.
The second prince came to his senses and saw Maxie above him. She was extending her hand to him.
He wanted to ask what she was doing there, but now was clearly not the best time to do that. So he silently accepted help and climbed back to the top of the cliff.
Once he was safe, Razor's composure was short-lived.
— Brother…! — he exhaled anxiously looking down, «What's wrong with him?
— You still have to ask? — Snape's daughter snorted, «You saw him go off to be eaten by snakes.
— But you can't do that! — The prince became furious, — What do you mean…!
— Listen,» the girl also became angry, folding her arms across her chest, «That bastard just nearly killed you, and you're worried about what happened to him?
Razor was desperate.
— But he's… He's my brother…
Maxie snorted.
— You seem to be the only one who feels that way.
The boy fell silent.
He made a few more attempts to get downstairs and rescue Philip-but Maxie stopped him. According to her it's useless and won't solve anything.
— He's either dead or alive. Though the latter is unlikely… Anyway, you can't help it now.
In the end they both sat down on the ground, each in his own thoughts. When they'd all but forgotten about the imminent retirement of their brother, Razor had the good sense to ask her a question:
— What are you doing here? From what I hear, your father has you locked away.
— You've got to be kidding me. — Maxie snorted, «As if that would stop me.
— So… Did you run away?
— No,» she said ironically, «I went for a walk.
They both sighed heavily.
— But how… How did you find me? — Razor couldn't help but wonder.
She glanced at him incredulously.
— This village happens to be the closest to the border of Oberon… I was going to leave there for the Capital. But I saw you on the way, and I followed you here just for fun. It was well worth it.
Razor was silent, his face in his lap. He still couldn't quite come to his senses.
— Thank you for your help,» he muttered.
Maxie grinned.
— You are my father's apprentice. It would be sad if his efforts on you all these years were in vain.
— …
— And then there's the pretty girl who's obviously going to cry at your funeral. That's not good either.
There's a short silence again.
— You know, I'm sorry… But I think your brother's already got the scoop,» she said eloquently.
— It's not that…» Razor tried to find the words, «It's just that my brother's been in hiding for so long for fear of being pursued by Rachel's spies. And perhaps he's become a little obsessed…
— «A little obsessed?» — The girl repeated angrily, «Just because he wanted to kill you, you call that 'a little'?
Razor sighed grimly and didn't know what to say.
— I really don't know what happened to him.
Maxie snorted.
— But I do! He just went crazy.
Razor wasn't feeling well. It was hard to admit: that his six-month
— It's the first time I've ever met such a strange woman.
