Chapter 931: The Shadow Guard and the Gathering

Chapter 931: The Shadow Guard and the Gathering

The heavy iron doors of Zhan Tian's private courtyard groaned open.A few days had passed since the execution of the Gongsun Clan's rebellious faction. Tielan and Canghai walked through the entrance, shaking the dust of the ruined territories from their dark commander robes.

They had successfully stabilized the Gongsun lands, integrated Ming as the new Clan Leader and established the new fifty-fifty tribute lines. The logistical nightmare was over and the parents were finally back home. Li Yu was waiting for them on the porch and he offered a respectful bow to his parents.

"The borders are secure." Tielan announced as she walked up the steps and offered her son a tired but warm smile. "Ming is handling the transition well with the help of our elders and the Eversong administrators."

"That is good news." Li Yu replied.

"Now that we have returned," Canghai said as he joined them on the porch, "we need to settle another matter. The eight entities that followed you have been idling. It is time to give them official roles within our structure."

Tielan nodded in agreement. "They are unique. I have reviewed their cultivation bases. The two Core Wardens, Haelan and Jhyra, are incredibly powerful in their own right. They are weaker than your father and I but their soul arts are strong and highly specialized."

"They were bound by their Ancestor to protect me." Li Yu reminded his parents. "That was their original purpose."

"Then that is the role they shall officially hold." Tielan decided. "Haelan and Jhyra will become your official, recognized bodyguards. The other six will support them and act as your personal retainers. If you need errands run or messages delivered to specific factions, they will handle it. They will operate entirely under your direct command."

Li Yu thought about it for a moment. It wasn't much of a change from what they were already doing but the official recognition carried significant weight. They could move freely within the Zhan Clan and they would get resources for their duties.

"They will be given their own private pavilion near this courtyard." Canghai added. "Furthermore, they will receive a steady supply of cultivation resources directly from the Zhan Clan. They are technically foreign entities but since they serve you, they will not be treated as mere servants."

Li Yu knew that Haelan and Jhyra would not turn down free resources. The Eidolon Court had sacrificed an entire realm just to secure the foundation of their Ancestor. They were deeply practical people.

"I will inform them." Li Yu agreed. "I can just send them a transmission if I plan to leave the estate ahead of time."

"And if you do not plan ahead?" Tielan asked with a raised eyebrow. "If you simply leave because something urgent comes up?"

Canghai pulled a small and intricately carved token of iron from his spatial ring.

"This token can be bound to your specific Qi signature and linked to their pavilion." Canghai explained while handing the item to his son. "If you leave the Zhan Clan without prior notice, the token will instantly alert the Wardens to your location. They will never be truly separated from you."

Li Yu accepted the token and stored it away. It was an incredibly efficient system.

"There is one more thing we need to discuss." Canghai said. His tone shifted slightly, becoming a bit more formal. "My clan and the Zhan Clan have decided to host a massive joint banquet in your honor."

Li Yu paused and he looked at his father with a slight frown.

"A banquet?" Li Yu asked hesitantly. "I appreciate the gesture but is that truly necessary? I prefer to meet people naturally over time, rather than being paraded in front of a massive crowd all at once."

Canghai smiled sympathetically and placed a hand on his son's shoulder.

"I understand your hesitation." Canghai said gently. "I prefer the quiet of the sword path myself. But that is simply how it goes sometimes when you hold a supreme lineage. There are traditions and political formalities that must be followed. Both clans need to officially present you to the vassal leaders and the allied factions. It secures your position and projects unity."

Li Yu let out a quiet sigh but he nodded. He knew his parents and his grandfather had gone to immense lengths to protect him. Attending a formal dinner was the least he could do to honor their efforts.

"Where will it be held?" Li Yu asked.

"At the Li Clan." Canghai answered. "The elegant pavilions of the sword path are much better suited for a massive gathering than here. We depart in three days."

Stolen story; please report.

Three days later, the sky above the Li Clan estate was filled with the brilliant streaks of arriving spiritual ships and flying treasures.

Li Yu arrived with his parents and his grandfather. They did not take a massive warship; Zhan Tian simply folded space and delivered them directly to the entrance of the grand banquet hall.

The moment they stepped onto the white jade tiles, a figure approached them.

It was Li Muchen, the Patriarch of the Li Clan. He wore pristine silver robes and possessed an aura of quiet but absolute authority.

"Welcome home, Canghai." Muchen greeted with a warm smile before turning his sharp eyes directly to Li Yu. The Patriarch analyzed the young man for a long moment, noting the opalescent Qi humming beneath the surface.

"You have grown into a formidable warrior, Li Yu." Muchen said softly, remembering him from the rescue mission.

"Thank you, Patriarch." Li Yu replied with a respectful bow.

Muchen nodded approvingly. He then turned his attention to the armored figure standing near the entrance as well.

"Zhan Yue." Muchen greeted.

The Patriarch of the Zhan Clan stepped forward from the shadows of the entrance. To Li Yu's slight surprise, Zhan Yue did not offer a formal bow. Instead, the Zhan Clan Patriarch let out a booming laugh and clasped Muchen's forearm in a warrior's grip.

"Muchen." Zhan Yue grinned. "It is good to see you outside of a war council for once. I see your gardens are still as excessively pretty as ever."

"And your manners are still as excessively blunt." Muchen countered with a dry chuckle while returning the firm grip.

The two leaders were actually quite good friends. Over the decades, through the union of Canghai and Tielan, they had spent hours coordinating logistics and managing the immense burdens of their respective empires. They understood the crushing weight of leadership better than anyone else and that shared burden had forged a genuine bond of mutual respect and friendship over time.

"Let us head inside." Muchen offered while gesturing toward the open doors of the banquet hall. "The elders are eager to meet the boy."

The grand hall was breathtaking. The ceiling was an illusionary array projecting a starry night sky. Massive tables carved from ancient spirit wood were loaded with rare delicacies and glowing wines. Thousands of cultivators, ranging from elite disciples to powerful vassal lords, filled the room with a chaotic but respectful hum of conversation.

As Li Yu walked toward the head tables with the two Patriarchs, several key figures broke away from the crowd to introduce themselves.

"Li Yu." A refined older man in silver robes approached first. He possessed an elegant and pragmatic aura. "I am Elder Li Qingshan. I handle the logistics and diplomacy for the clan. If you ever require passage through restricted trade routes or need an audience with a foreign empire, you come to me."

"A pleasure, Elder Qingshan." Li Yu nodded respectfully.

Immediately behind him stood a stern, older woman whose Qi felt like a calm but incredibly deadly winter breeze.

"I am Elder Li Xinyue." She introduced herself. "I am the Keeper of the Ancestral Sword Manuals. If you ever wish to refine sword techniques with true orthodox technique, the library doors are open to you."

"Thank you, Elder Xinyue." Li Yu replied and was genuinely interested in the offer.

The third Li Clan elder was a quiet, calculating man who simply offered a brief nod.

"Elder Li Jianhong." The man stated plainly. "Master of Arrays and Formations. Come to me if you have any questions regarding them.”

Before Li Yu could even thank the array master, a heavy, booming voice interrupted the elegant introductions.

"Enough with the talking and the reading!"

A hulking and heavily scarred man shoved his way past the Li elders. He looked like a walking mountain of muscle.

"I am Elder Zhan Tie!" The man roared happily while clapping a massive hand on Li Yu's armored shoulder. "Master of the Training Grounds! When this boring dinner is over, you are coming to my courtyards to spar!"

"He is not going to waste his time brawling in the dirt with you, Tie." Another fierce and loud man interjected. This was Elder Zhan Yan, the Vanguard Tactician and he had a wild look in his eyes. "He belongs on the front lines! We need to deploy him to the borders to shatter the enemy defensive lines!"

"He needs a proper weapon first." A third man grumbled as he was walking up with his arms crossed. This was Elder Zhan Kuang, the Weapons Master. "Come to me when you need a real man’s weapon!"

Li Yu could only smile wryly at the overwhelming aggression of the Zhan elders. The contrast between the elegant scholars of the Li Clan and the blunt warlords of the Zhan Clan was incredibly stark.

Finally, a terrifyingly stoic man stepped forward. He did not yell and he did not smile. He simply stared at Li Yu with eyes that seemed to pierce straight through him and into his soul.

"I am Elder Zhan Feng." The man said quietly. The surrounding warlords instantly fell silent. "I am the Head of Internal Discipline. I enforce the Patriarch's decrees and root out internal corruption. You have the backing of the Worldkeeper, Li Yu. But remember that true authority comes from discipline, not just raw power. Do not let the privileges of your background corrupt your foundation and mind."

It was a stern warning but it was delivered with absolute sincerity. Li Yu met the man's intense gaze and offered a deep and respectful bow.

"I will remember your words, Elder Feng." Li Yu promised.

The introductions were brief but they clearly established some of the core pillars of both clans. Li Yu realized that while his parents and his grandfather provided his backing, these were the men and women who actually ran the day-to-day operations of the clan.

"Alright, that is enough crowding." Patriarch Muchen declared while clapping his hands once to break the intense atmosphere. "The boy needs to breathe. Let us take our seats. The vassal lords are waiting to present their respects."

Li Yu followed the Patriarchs toward the elevated head table. He looked out over the massive sea of faces filling the banquet hall. He recognized the heavy weight of the political game he was now officially a part of.

He took a deep breath, adjusted his robes and prepared to meet the rest of his new reality.
