Chapter 923: The Sword Decrees

Chapter 923: The Sword Decrees

The transition from the desolate realm to the Li Clan estate was instantaneous for Li Canghai. He emerged from the swirling blue rift and stepped onto the immaculate white jade tiles of the ancestral pavilion. The environment of the Li Clan was vastly different from the crushing gravity and the brutalist iron of the Zhan Clan continent. The Li Clan resided in a sprawling realm of breathtaking elegance and tranquility.

Soaring pagodas carved from pearlescent white stone pierced the clouds. Gentle streams of spiritual water flowed through vibrant gardens filled with ancient willow trees. The air was incredibly crisp and hummed with a pure and refined Qi that naturally calmed the mind. Disciples dressed in flowing white and silver robes walked the pathways with purposeful grace.

The Li Clan was not an empire of hammers. It was an empire of scholars and swordsmen. They were renowned across the cosmos for their mastery of Qi techniques and their unparalleled devotion to the sword path.

Canghai did not pause to admire the scenery. He walked purposefully through the sliding wooden doors of the ancestral pavilion and entered the main audience chamber. The chamber was lined with countless racks holding masterwork swords. The walls were adorned with ancient scrolls detailing complex Qi arrays and shifting formations.

Sitting behind a low but elegant desk at the far end of the chamber was Li Muchen. He was the Patriarch of the Li Clan. He possessed an aura of quiet authority and his sharp eyes missed nothing. Muchen was an older man with silver hair tied back in a neat bun and he held a steaming cup of delicate spirit tea. Canghai stopped in front of the desk and offered a formal bow.

"Canghai." Muchen greeted him with a warm smile as he set his teacup down. "You have returned quickly from the front lines. The cosmos is buzzing with the news of the Worldkeeper's return. Is your father in law well?"

"He is well, Patriarch." Canghai replied evenly. "But I am not here to report on the crusade. I am here to report on my family."

Muchen leaned back in his chair. The quiet authority in his eyes shifted into a look of knowing satisfaction. A slow smile spread across his face.

"So." Muchen said softly. "The time has finally come to bring the boy out of the shadows?"

Canghai nodded. "It has. He is currently residing at the Zhan Clan estate with his grandfather."

"Excellent." Muchen let out a breath of relief. "It has been a long and agonizing wait for you and Tielan." Muchen stood up from his desk and smoothed his silver robes.

"The political landscape is going to shift violently with the Worldkeeper's return." Muchen noted.

"Before you issue any decrees," Canghai interrupted firmly. "There is a specific condition you must attach to the announcement."

"A condition?" Muchen asked.

"Li Yu will not be taking the title of clan heir." Canghai stated with absolute finality. "He has explicitly refused it. He will never hold the formal title of heir within the Li Clan."

Muchen stared at Canghai for a long moment.

"He removes himself from the immediate crosshairs of the internal factions," Muchen noted with a slow nod of approval. "While retaining the power of his lineage. Very wise. I will issue the decree immediately."

The Li Clan handled their supreme decrees differently than the Zhan clan. Muchen raised his hand and channeled a massive surge of refined sword Qi. He formed a complex seal with his fingers. In the armory adjacent to the audience chamber, hundreds of pristine white swords began to vibrate.

With a synchronized hum of vibrating steel, the swords shot out of their scabbards. They flew into the audience chamber and hovered in the air in front of the Patriarch. Muchen infused his Qi and his voice directly into the blades.

"Fly." Muchen commanded.

The hundreds of swords shot out of the pavilion like streaks of white lightning. They scattered across the sprawling estate tearing through the sky and leaving trails of glowing Qi in their wake.

The swords flew to every major courtyard, every training hall and every meditation pavilion within the Li Clan. They flew by the instructors and the disciples. The moment the blades were near, Muchen's voice resonated clearly from the vibrating steel before the blades continued on their way.

The decree announced the existence of Li Yu, the son of Li Canghai and Zhan Tielan. It mandated respect across all territories and formally declared that he would not accept the title of heir. The elegant courtyards of the Li Clan erupted into hushed but frantic whispers.

"Canghai has a son?" A young disciple in silver robes gasped. He stopped his intricate sword forms and stared at the sky. "How did no one know? The union of our sword path and their physical abilities... his foundation must be terrifying."

"He was hidden in the lower realms." A refined instructor noted while tapping a closed fan against his palm. "His Qi pathways might be stunted. The lower realms lack the ambient spiritual purity required for true cultivation."

"Do not be a fool." A senior elder rebuked the instructor sharply as she smoothed her white robes. "He is currently under the direct protection of Worldkeeper Zhan Tian. If his foundation was garbage, the Worldkeeper would not be allowing these announcements. To announce him so loudly means the boy is already a monster. If he wasn’t already a monster, the Worldkeeper has a way to make him one."

The political analysts of the clan gathered in the library pavilions. They debated the exact same point that the Zhan Clan elders had discussed.

"Refusing the heir title is an insult to the Li Clan." A conservative elder argued quietly.

"It is not an insult. It is a statement of fact." A younger pragmatic elder countered. "What can the heir title offer him? His father commands a massive portion of our military strength and his mother is also a commander with a powerful army. He is the grandson of a Worldkeeper. He does not need the title. His existence alone shifts the balance of power."

Deep within the central residential peaks nestled among a forest of ancient spirit bamboo sat an incredibly elegant pavilion. The structure was surrounded by complex Qi gathering arrays and defensive wards. This was the private sanctuary of Li Mei. She was the current official Heir of the Li Clan.

Li Mei sat gracefully in the center of the main room. She wore pristine white silk robes embroidered with silver lotus patterns. Her features were delicate and beautiful but her eyes held a sharp, calculating intelligence that rarely revealed her true emotions. A pristine sword with a pale blue hilt rested across her lap.

Sitting across from Li Mei were her two younger siblings. They had come to visit her for morning tea when the decree went out.

"Well." Her younger brother Li Jian said with a lighthearted laugh. He leaned back on his hands. "That is certainly unexpected. Uncle Canghai has a son nobody knew about. And he doesn't even want your job Mei. You must be relieved."

"It is excellent news for the clan." Her younger sister Li Hua agreed with a warm smile. She poured another cup of tea. "The revelation of this person strengthens our clan. And he explicitly refuses the heir title. That should silence the conservative elders who always look for reasons to complain."

Li Mei did not laugh and she did not smile. She kept her expression perfectly neutral as she stared at the bamboo swaying in the wind.

"Yes." Li Mei said softly. Her voice was smooth and pleasant. "It is wonderful news. The family is growing."

"Exactly." Li Jian nodded. "And it makes perfect sense that he refused the title. Think about it. Uncle Canghai has never been interested in controlling clan politics. He could have easily made a play for the Patriarch's seat ages ago with his backing but he never did. He only cares about the sword path and protecting the realms. He surely would not want his son to be dragged into the administrative headaches of the heir position."

"I am sure you are right Jian." Li Mei agreed. She reached out and delicately picked up her teacup. Outwardly she was the picture of an elegant and supportive clan heir. She offered no harsh words and displayed no anger.

But internally, a cold and terrifyingly sharp blade of suspicion was forming in her mind.

Li Mei was not foolish enough to believe that someone with the combined backing of Canghai, Tielan and the Worldkeeper simply 'didn't want' power. She had spent her entire life studying the complex political currents of the Li Clan and the wider cosmos. She had fought tooth and nail to secure the title of heir. She had sacrificed countless hours of cultivation to build alliances and outmaneuver her rivals.

She viewed the world through a lens of ambition.

Li Mei thought to herself as she took a slow sip of her tea but she kept her eyes perfectly calm. The official heir is scrutinized by every elder and bound by endless rules. He is staying outside the hierarchy so he can operate freely. He refuses the title because the title is currently a cage.

She did not believe for a single second that Li Yu was a harmless cousin.

Li Mei's mind raced as she calculated the shifting power dynamics. He has the bloodline and he has the backing to challenge her. The moment his personal strength matures, the conservative elders will start whispering. They will look at me and then they will look at the grandson of the Worldkeeper. They will wonder if the clan would be better served by a monster rather than a scholar.

She knew that formal decrees meant nothing in the face of power. If Li Yu decided he wanted the Li Clan tomorrow, his grandfather could simply walk into the ancestral pavilion and demand it along with Li Canghai. There would be few that would stop them.

"Are you alright, Mei?" Li Hua asked gently. She noticed her sister's quiet demeanor.

"I am perfectly fine." Li Mei smiled warmly at her sister. She set her teacup down with elegant precision. "I was just thinking about what kind of welcoming gift would be appropriate for our new cousin. We must ensure he feels completely at home when he finally visits."

"Oh, a gift is a great idea!" Li Jian agreed enthusiastically. "Maybe a high tier cultivation manual? Or some rare spirit herbs?"

"We will find something suitable." Li Mei said softly.

Her siblings saw an unknown cousin finally coming into the light. Li Mei saw a massive unstoppable threat looming on the horizon.

She did not voice her fears and she did not display any hostility though. She simply adjusted her pristine white robes and began to quietly calculate exactly how she was going to deal with Li Yu if he ever decided to step onto her path.

‘It is best if you just follow the path you say and stay out of my way cousin…’ Li Mei thought to herself.
